Bible Verses

Luke 16: 1-13

Reflection: Jubilee

Excerpts from the reflection by Rev. Paula Sohl:

“Through our behaviors and identifications we will serve somebody.

The Luke text calls it a choice between God and Mammon.

In another version of the verse we heard earlier that inspired this song we read: ‘No servant can serve two masters, for either they will hate the one and love the other, or else they will hold to the one that despise the other.’

You cannot serve God and Mammon. We each have our very personalized concept of God as we experience them. We struggle to learn together what God requires of us, and we serve God, or we serve Mammon.

Mammon is an Aramaic word that speaks not just of money, but of the whole package of power, privilege, wealth, and domination.

We are serving Mammon when we support the hierarchies that perpetuate domination and oppression.”
